Kyiv: Ancient and Modern
The capital city combines golden-domed churches with contemporary culture and nightlife.
Kyiv, one of Europe's oldest cities, has been continuously inhabited for over 1,500 years. Today it's a dynamic metropolis where ancient history and modern energy coexist in fascinating ways.
The city's most iconic landmark is the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), a UNESCO World Heritage Site where monks have lived since the 11th century. The golden domes of its churches shimmer above the Dnipro River, while underground cave systems contain mummified remains of early monks.
Saint Sophia Cathedral, another UNESCO site, was built in 1037 and remains one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in Eastern Europe. The mosaic of the Virgin Orant in the central apse has survived almost a thousand years.
Modern Kyiv is equally compelling. The Podil district has transformed into a hub of restaurants, bars, and galleries. The Arena City entertainment complex and Khreschatyk Boulevard offer shopping and nightlife. The metro system, with its extraordinarily deep stations decorated like palaces, is itself a tourist attraction.
